Offline Van Inventory When There Is No Cell Signal

Assume the job site is a Faraday cage

Basements, commercial kitchens, rural wells, steel shops. Design for zero bars. The tech should open the scanner, scan, type the job, and see “saved on this phone.” Anything less will be skipped.

A spinner that never ends is worse than no app. It trains people to force-quit and guess later.

The phone is the temporary warehouse

Queued scans are real. Show them in a pending list. Let the tech know they will sync. When signal returns, push them in order. Do not silently drop a scan from an hour ago.

FleetStock’s offline bar and queue exist so the tech can trust the phone the way they trust a paper ticket — except paper never updates the van count.

Conflict rules should be boring

If two offline scans hit the same part, apply both. Negative qty is a signal to recount, not a reason to reject the truth of the scan. Rejecting field data “to keep the database clean” makes the database a liar.

Office staff should not edit away a negative without asking what happened. Negatives are smoke. Find the fire.

Snapshot the catalog for the road

Techs still need to search a part when they cannot hit the API. A local snapshot of the van’s parts and photos is what makes offline lookup possible. Without it they can only scan barcodes they can see, not search a name.

Refresh the snapshot on shop Wi-Fi in the morning. That is enough for a service day.

Tell customers the truth about time, not about signal

The customer does not care that you are offline. They care that the part is on the truck. Offline inventory is how you know that before you promise a finish time.

If you cannot look up the van, you cannot promise. The app has to work in the hole you are standing in.
