Dead Stock on Service Vans: Find It, Move It, Stop Buying It
Dead stock is a van paying rent to carry a part nobody will use before it corrodes, expires, or goes obsolete.

Define dead before you hunt
Ninety days with no scan is a good start for daily-layer parts. One hundred twenty for specialty. Seasonal parts get a pass until the off-season starts — then they should go home to the warehouse.
Write the definition. Otherwise every part has a defender with a story from 2019.
The van is the worst warehouse
Heat, cold, vibration, coffee. A board that would have been fine on a shop shelf becomes a callback after a summer on a steel floor. Dead stock on a van is not just tied-up cash. It is quality risk.
Transfer dead items to the warehouse the same week you find them. Do not “leave them in case.” That is how they stay dead.
Sell, return, or write down
Vendor return if you can. Sell to another shop if you cannot. Write down if both fail. A $0 fantasy cost on a dead board keeps it looking useful in reports. It is not useful. Be honest.
Do this quarterly, not as a New Year’s resolution.
Dead stock is a min-stock bug
If it was on the van because min was 1, set min to 0. If it was on the van because a tech likes that brand, put the brand in the warehouse. If it was on the van because a kit went stale, fix the kit.
Finding dead stock without changing the rule that created it is a treasure hunt you will repeat forever.
Use the catalog photo as a filter
If nobody can identify the part from the photo and the name, it should not be on a van. Mystery SKUs are dead stock wearing a barcode.
Delete or archive SKUs you will not buy again. A long master list full of ghosts makes search worse for the live parts.
FAQ
What dollar value is typical?
First audits often find thousands per van in shops that never counted. After a year of scans, it should be small and seasonal.
Should we count rusty fittings as dead?
If you would not install them, they are not stock. Scrap them. Do not transfer rust to the warehouse as a virtue.
Can software flag dead stock?
Yes — last used date plus location. FleetStock usage history is how you sort the graveyard without opening every drawer first.
