Trees hide multiples

A part in a folder has one home in the UI. In the real world it has six homes: the shelf and five vans. Folders force you to pick a lie. Either you pretend there is one pile, or you clone the part into five fake folders that never stay in sync.

Locations are the honest model. Folders are a filing cabinet metaphor wearing work boots.

Dispatch cannot query a tree

Nobody asks “is it under Electrical > Caps > Dual run?” They ask “does Truck 6 have a 45/5?” If the software cannot answer in one tap, dispatch will not open it. Then you are back to calling techs.

The query is the product. Everything else is decoration.

Restock cannot follow a tree

Night restock is a pick list per van. A folder tree produces a tour of the catalog, not a tour of Truck 4. Pickers who shop the tree will over-pick pretty folders and skip ugly ones.

Min stock by vehicle is what makes a pick list. Folders do not have min stock that means anything in a driveway.

Job costing cannot follow a tree

When a part is used, it must leave a specific van and hit a specific job. Folder apps often decrement “the company.” Then you know you are lighter, not who is lighter, and not which ticket owes you money.

That is how shops end the month with a mystery shrink number and a set of invoices that look fine.

Stop translating, start replacing

If your team maintains a spreadsheet of truck counts next to a folder app, the spreadsheet already won. Replace the model. Keep the photos if you want. Lose the tree.
