Water Heater Job Kits: Stop Forgetting the Expansion Tank

Write the kit once, like a permit

Tank or tankless. Gas or electric. Standard 40/50. Each gets a kit: unit, shutoffs, flex or hard pipe, T&P, expansion tank if your codes want it, pan, stand, connectors, tape, and the anode if you stock it.

The kit lives in software. Humans should not reinvent it at 6:45 a.m. while drinking cold coffee.

Transfer the kit the afternoon before

When the job is on tomorrow’s board, move the kit to the assigned van. If a part is zero, you still have daylight. If you wait until the morning, you wait at the supply house with a customer taking the day off work.

Scan the kit onto the job

Using the kit should not require twenty scans if you do not want it to — but each billed part still needs to hit the job. Either explode the kit on use or scan the high-value pieces and a fittings bundle you actually price.

What you must not do is roll a $1,400 job with “misc $25” because the expansion tank felt like a detail.

Return unused code parts

If the house already had a good expansion tank, return yours to the van. That is a scan. Otherwise the next water heater is missing a tank and nobody knows why.

Returned parts are how kits stay reusable. Unreturned “extras” are how kits rot.

Different cities, different kits

If you work across jurisdictions, name the kits by city or code set. Do not keep a mental patch list. The apprentice cannot inherit your head.

Review kits twice a year when vendors change SKUs. A dead part number in a kit is a guaranteed second trip.
