Organizing an Appliance Repair Van So Parts Are Findable

Zone by system, not by brand first

Water, heat, sealed system, electrical, hardware. Brands live inside those zones. If you zone by brand first, a GE water valve and a Whirlpool water valve live twenty feet apart and you will buy a third.

Label the zone on the shelf lip. Label the SKU on the bin. Match the name in FleetStock. New hires should not need folklore.

A core crate that is not a junk crate

One crate. Bags. Job numbers. That is the entire core system. If cores mix with sellable pumps, you will install a failed part someday. That is a review you cannot unwrite.

Empty the crate Friday. Scan the motion off the van. The crate returns empty Monday. No romance, no archaeology.

Small parts will flood you

Clips, screws, and zip ties can be bulk bins. Do not SKU them unless you bill them. Save SKU energy for valves, boards, pumps, and ignitors.

Bulk does not mean invisible. A labeled bulk bin still has a home. A coffee can of mixed screws is how you waste twelve minutes on a $3 problem.

Keep the catalog photo in the restock loop

When the warehouse restocks the van, they should see the photo. Look-alike pumps are a known trap. The picker who only reads a truncated SKU will stock the wrong cousin.

Print a restock sheet with names and bins, or pick from the app on a phone. Paper that does not match the app is how you create a second truth.

Recount the zones that lie

Electrical and water zones lie the most. Count those twice a month. Sealed-system parts can wait for the monthly full count. Spend time where the misses are.

After each count, fix one label. Continuous small fixes beat an annual van rebuild that everyone dreads and nobody maintains.
