Charge Every Fitting That Left the Plumbing Van

Labor hours get argued. Fittings get forgotten. The forgotten ones are why a “good week” still feels tight.

Plumber selecting fittings from an organized work van

The customer already expects parts

Homeowners know a valve costs money. They do not know you donated three of them. Billing the part is not greedy. It is how shops stay staffed.

If your market demands a fittings allowance, put it on the ticket as a line you chose — not as silence.

Scan before you wipe your hands

The last wet minute on site is when memory is best. Scan qty 4 of the PEX fittings. Return the two you did not use. Walk to the truck done.

Waiting until the drive back is how “I think it was a few elbows” becomes $0.

Office bills the job export

Do not ask techs to type a novel in the FSM. Ask them to scan. The office applies the catalog price and tax in the tool you already use.

FleetStock’s job-parts export exists to make that handoff dull. Dull billing is profitable billing.

Goodwill should have a name

If you decide not to charge a supply line, mark it goodwill on the job. You still needed the van count to drop. Invisible generosity wrecks inventory and also wrecks coaching — you cannot tell a discount from a miss.

Owners can be generous. Software should still be honest.

Show techs their billed-vs-used once a month

Not as a threat. As a scoreboard. The plumber who scans and bills will have fewer supply runs because the van stays stocked from real use. That is the personal win.

Tie bonuses to scan compliance if you want. Do not tie them only to revenue. Revenue without scans is how you pay commission on parts you never invoiced.

FAQ

What if we sell flat-rate plumbing?

Still scan. You need cost even when the customer sees one price. Flat rate without parts truth is a guess.

Should we bill tape and glue?

If it is on the price book, yes. If you treat it as consumable, leave it bulk and stop pretending to count ounces.

How soon do we notice a lift?

Most shops see cleaner invoices within two weeks of scanning the top twenty fittings.
